If you’re miffed that Ford chose not to offer the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain on the new F-150 Tremor, then this 2021 SEMA Show concept from Hypertech may be what you’re looking for.
With the F-150 now offering the class-exclusive Pro Power Onboard generator across the model line, it was only a matter of time before the unique feature was put to use off the beaten path, rather than on the job site.
Ford is billing this Hypertech F-150 PowerBoost hybrid show truck as the “ultimate outdoorsman’s dream.” If you recall, conventional pure fossil-fueled F-150s equipped with Pro Power Onboard are offered with a 2.0-kW system, while hybrid models are offered with either 2.4 kW or an optional 7.2 kW of power thanks to the hybrid’s 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack.
The Hypertech F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid features the optional 7.2-kW system that Ford says can power a plasma cutter, TiG welder, chop saw, air compressor, angle grinder, and floodlighting all at the same time. Only in this case, power is used for an electric grill, refrigerator/freezer, sink, ice machine, washer/dryer, and other unnamed accessories.
As one would expect to find at the SEMA Show, additional equipment includes a Ford Performance Parts onboard air compressor, an LED off-road light bar mounted above the windshield off-road bumpers, and a bed cap with lockable storage by Leer pulled from the Ford Accessories catalog.
The 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 portion of the Powerboost Hybrid powertrain now exhales through an upgraded cat-back system, while the truck also gains a mild lift to go along with upgraded beadlock wheels and tires. Probably sounds pretty good, and Warn winch/brush guard combination ain’t nothing to sneeze at, either.
Really, how hard could it be for Ford to offer an F-150 Tremor PowerBoost? It seems inevitable at this point.
After speaking with F-150 Product Marketing Manager Joe McCarty earleir this month, we now know the twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 was chosen for the F-150 Tremor because its towing capability best matches the demands of the Tremor’s target user group “right now.” We image that customer base would grow with electrification.
Perhaps if there is enough consumer hurrah for the Hypertech F-150 Hybrid, the product managers at Ford might decide to take a second look at an F-150 Tremor PowerBoost after all.
