Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

There are times in construction and automotive when getting the right torque isn’t a suggestion; it’s crucial. We enjoy our digital torque wrenches but decided to take a step over to the purely mechanical side of things and see what the Mac Tools TWV250DR has to offer in its 50 – 250 ft-lbs torque wrench.

Adjusting the torque settings on this wrench is very simple and only takes a few seconds. Use one hand to pull down the square collar and rotate the handle clockwise to increase torque and counterclockwise to decrease.

The square collar pulls double duty by helping to prevent the torque wrench from rolling.

This wrench is a dual capacity design meaning you can either set the torque in foot-pounds or Newton-meters depending on your application. The convex viewing windows magnify the numbers on the dial for increased accuracy. Foot-pound settings show up as white numbers on a black background while Newton-meter settings are black numbers on a white background.

As we expect from a professional-grade torque wrench, you can switch directions to cover standard and reverse thread fasteners.

Many of the torque wrenches we’ve tested over the years have a digital readout and use a combination of auditory and haptic feedback. The Mac Tools TWV250DR features a mechanical feedback system to alert you that you’ve reached your desired torque. While applying smooth pressure, you’ll hear a light click and the wrench will slip a few degrees to let you know you’ve hit your target.

Note the accuracy of this model is ±4%.

Like all precision measuring tools, we recommend you have your torque wrench checked regularly. You can either send it off to the Mac Tools metrological laboratory to have it checked by your trusted calibration service. Ideally, plan to calibrate it once a year or anytime it takes a hard tumble.

The Mac Tools TWV250DR retails for $429.99 direct and carries a 1-year limited warranty. For Professionals, use the dealer locator on their website to find your local Mac Tools Franchisee.

For professionals who prefer the simplicity of a purely mechanical torque wrench, the Mac Tools TWV250DR is an excellent choice. While the convex magnification windows take some getting used to, it’s an easy-to-use option that won’t leave you pushing a series of buttons to get the job done.
