Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Milwaukee recently introduced the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/4-inch Die Grinder featuring the PowerState brushless motor, RedLithium battery pack, RedLink Plus intelligence, and the same metal housing and gearing system found in Milwaukee’s corded die grinders. The company claims the tool is capable of removing material faster than a corded grinder and grinds up to 20 minutes on a single charge.

“When faced with a situation that requires grinding in tight spaces or irregular surfaces, mechanical and metal fabrication professionals will most often turn to a die grinder to get the job done. However, the cordless options available in today’s market do not offer the performance or run-time required for prolonged use. Unwilling to settle on sub-par performance, we spent countless hours conducting jobsite research and advancing our technologies until we could introduce a solution that provides a true productivity enhancement with the M18 Fuel 1/4-inch Die Grinder.”

–Andrew Plowman, Vice President of Product Management for Milwaukee Tool

The new M18 Fuel 1/4-inch Die Grinder is fully compatible with the entire M18 line.

A die grinder is much more than just a Dremel that’s been hanging out with Lance Armstrong too long. It’s a powerful, invaluable tool for metalworkers and machinists. The necessary power combined with the relative niche-iness of the tool is why you don’t see a ton of cordless options out there – but they do exist.

Milwaukee already has an M12 cordless rotary tool, but what they’re really going after with the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/4-Inch Die Grinder is the combination of power and runtime. Packed with 5.0 batteries, runtime should be pretty solid at 20 minutes. There aren’t a ton of applications that require your die grinder to be engaged for a longer period than that.

In the case you do need more runtime, you’ve got the Milwaukee 9.0 battery to turn to as an option. Beyond that, a corded mode will be your best bet. However, we’re going to have to wait for Tim Johnson and his team over at our sister site, Shop Tool Reviews, to let us know what they come up with in the metal shop.
