CheeseIsGood: The top plays on both sides are very obvious tonight, and my preference is to overthink it on the hitting side and just play deGrom/Nola. Sure, Taillon will be necessary here and there, but I’d rather fish for cheap bats a little off the radar with things like the White Sox, Orioles, Twins and A’s to combine with the more obvious Phillies, Astros and Blue Jays.
TJ Zwarych: Our MLB projections have Nola and deGrom both well over 40 FanDuel points, and no one else on the entire slate comes in with over 32. These two are the top plays by a mile. And even with running 150 lineups, I wouldn’t play more than these two on FanDuel.
eys819: Lock in deGrom and differentiate with the bats. I love the Phillies as much as everyone else, but I would rather fade them than the best pitcher on the planet. The Mets and Yankees are elite offenses with good matchups, but poor ballparks. I still think they have a decent shot at matching the Phillies production. I will play some CHW and BAL stacks to get even further off the board.
gneiffer07: Pitching is very obvious with deGrom and Nola on the slate. While the chalk is going to be those two pitchers, it makes it tough to stack a lot of the top teams like Philly and Toronto. I plan on going a little off the board with BAL lefties to differentiate a bit.
Dean78904: The pitching chalk is spectacular so I’m very likely locking deGrom into every DK team I make and I’ll pair him with Nola if possible. I’ll try and get different combinations of the presumably popular Phillies. I think 3-3-2 / 3-3-1-1 type builds will be a little less popular than 4-4 / 5-3 stacks, so I’m good leaning that route.
CheeseIsGood: Jacob deGrom – It’s so goofy how good this guy is. Maybe he throws another 95 pitches, maybe he only throws 80. He can throw 65 and still be the top-scoring pitcher on the slate. He strikes out nearly half the batters he faces with no walks. At home against Colorado? Why are we still talking about this?
TJ Zwarych: Jacob deGrom – It feels slightly uncomfortable being this bullish when we don’t know his pitch count. That being said, he faces a Colorado team outside of Coors, and this is one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball. He has struck out 45.7% (!!!) of batters so far this year and is in his own tier of MLB pitchers.
eys819: Jacob deGrom – He is the best pitcher in baseball and gets the Rockies outside of Coors Field. He was up to 95 pitches in his last start which is more than enough for him to pay off his hefty price tag. The numbers are absurd and there is no reason to think he cannot continue to have enormous success as long as he is healthy, especially today against a weak offense.
gneiffer07: Jacob degrom – At this point, it really doesn’t matter what’s going and who’s on the slate when deGrom is pitching. deGrom is pitching better than any pitcher I’ve seen in my lifetime and potentially better than any pitcher in history right now. deGrom owns an xFIP around 1.00 and a K rate close to 50% right now. This is a “don’t overthink it” spot.
Dean78904: Jacob deGrom – Do you really need me to pitch deGrom being a good play vs the putrid Rockies? COL has the league’s 26th wRC+ vs RHP s and 27th wRC+ away from Coors and deGrom, well he is only the best pitcher in the league. The numbers are goofy good (45.7% K / 1.2% BB / 1.17 SIERA ) and we saw an encouraging 95 baseballs thrown in his previous outing. The only potential issue here is OWN % and salary (much more so on FD). Game theory be damned, I’m leaning in and I’ll have plenty of Chalkob ChalkGrom.
CheeseIsGood: Kyle Schwarber – Going back to last season, Justin Dunn is one of the worst pitchers in the league against left-handed batters. The only downside to playing chalk Kyle Schwarber is that the high walk rate of Dunn could lead to a 3-walk, score some runs kind of night where he doesn’t pay off his price tag. But, the flip side there is that the floor is so high with those walks added on to the immense ceiling from Schwarber’s power against a power-prone pitcher that he could easily be the player you can’t win without tonight.
TJ Zwarych: Kyle Schwarber – Justin Dunn is horrific and even worse against left-handed bats. Schwarber’s .308 ISO against righties this season is too good to pass up, even though he will be mega chalk on FD where he is extremely underpriced. I’ll still be playing Schwarber, but I’ll make sure to differentiate my secondary stacks with my Phillies lineups.
eys819: Kyle Schwarber – He has destroyed right-handed pitching with a .308 ISO and .350 wOBA. Today, he gets a fantastic matchup against a righty with a 16% strikeout rate who has allowed a .202 ISO to lefties since last year. The Reds bullpen is also one the worst in the league.
gneiffer07: Kyle Schwarber – Schwarber is going up against the worst pitcher on the slate by a decent margin. Dunn has been absolutely terrible this season giving up a FB and hard contact rate over 50% this season to go along with well below average K rate numbers. Schwarber is leading the NL in HRs and will be batting leadoff vs. Dunn. While he may not be cheap, he is easily the top projected hitter on the slate.
Dean78904: Kyle Schwarber – Unsurprisingly, Justin Dunn has gone from being a disaster in the Minor Leagues (6.75 ERA / 1.82 WHIP ) to getting shellacked in the Majors. The sample is small but the dude has been absolutely pummeled – a plethora of hard hits, minimal Ks, too many walks, and an absurd 3.38 HR/9. Enter Kyle Schwarber, who has MLB ’s 3rd highest ISO vs RHP s and will take his hacks in a positive ballpark. The OWN % specific to FD might become borderline ludicrous when considering the slate size, goofy low price ($3,200), and matchup. You can absolutely fade any hitter in baseball but do so with the understanding that it can potentially lead to an early laptop close this evening.
CheeseIsGood: The Twins are the highest-scoring team on the slate.
TJ Zwarych: George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero open the game with back-to-back jacks.
eys819: The White Sox put up 10+ runs.
gneiffer07: Rutchsman, Santander, and Mullins combine for three HRs.
Dean78904: The Phillies hit 5 HRs in the first 5 innings.
